We read multiple programs and chose this one, in part, because the author was adamant throughout her book that it would work - and stated REPEATEDLY that, if readers did not have success after 10 days (which, in her words, would be quite unbelievable), they should contact her immediately so that she could send a lengthy questionnaire (to help determine where the problem might lie) - and, after reviewing the form, she would provide assistance via a phone consultation. That was the kind of guarantee and troubleshooting support we were looking for, just in case we needed it.Further, we'd read many rave reviews about the program. We also read reviews stating that it absolutely did not work for some children... but those negative reviews seemed to be the minority. Furthermore, my husband and I don't do things halfway...so, we figured that the negative reviews were just from people who didn't try hard enough/didn't give it 100%.After reading the book twice, we set aside 4 whole days (Labor Day weekend 2018). My husband tended to our infant, our pets, cooking and cleaning, etc. My attention was 100% (ONE HUNDRED PERCENT) on our toddler every single second that he was awake. Ours was the absolute model of implementation. We had some success in the first couple of days (pees, and then poops, in the potty), and our son was hugely excited. But then - just as quickly - he seemed to be 'over' it. He started to have fun peeing where he pleased, trying to get one past me (even though my eyes were glued to him, and I always sprinted him right to the potty). To him, it was a game. Then, he stopped pooping in the potty altogether. He would just hold it for hours until he was in his 'nighttime underwear' (...exactly as some other reviewers had stated...though I'd dismissed at the time:/).He had shown every sign of readiness for a couple months before we started training (at 2.5 years), and he was extremely excited at first. We talked it up for weeks, and were BEYOND over-the-top with praise. We cordoned off a part of the house where he had preferred drinks and foods and played preferred games with me. We praised non-stop. We gave one gummy snack (his favorite) for pee in the potty, and two for poop. After the 4 intensive days that we'd allotted (i.e., an extra day just in case), we'd only had spotty success (i.e., when our toddler felt like it), so my husband took more days off of work so we could continue. (I work from home part-time, but also took time off.) After 10 truly intensive days (e.g., saying "Tell me when you need to go potty" every 10 seconds our toddler was awake), we finally contacted the author for assistance. It took a full week to get the following reply: that we could always just put our son back in diapers and try again in 3 months. We were floored. We inquired back about the promised questionnaire and phone consultation, and never got another reply.A few weeks ago, we ended up having a bunch of lab tests run because our toddler's poop had become an abnormal color (cream-colored), and there was a large mass in his abdomen. The mass turned out to be a huge amount of poop that he was simply holding in/refusing to pass. The doctor had us put him on daily Miralax to try to force it out, with only some success. He goes many days (still) without pooping - and, when he does go, it's in his nighttime underwear only. It's clearly about power and control for him.It has been a miserable 2+ months for our family. Our toddler is very bright, and possibly (we see now) more headstrong than most, but he is by no means an abnormal child. He has consistently responded to behavioral shaping and reinforcement techniques in every other aspect of life. There was absolutely no indication that this would be a problem for him. I do trust that we're in the minority with especially headstrong toddlers who want to exert control over potty training - but, considering the other reviews I saw, it can't be that uncommon. And after all of the guarantees the author gave, and the assurances that she would be there to help if 10 days passed without success, all she could say was 'maybe try again in 3 months' (after her whole book emphasized never turning back). When we contacted her back about the promised questionnaire and phone consultation, there was radio silence. We feel taken advantage of; lied to; duped. And our son (who has another follow-up appointment with a doctor in a couple days, to try to clear his bowels) is worse off for the experience. If you have a perfectly compliant child who has never challenged anything in his/her life, this may work wonderfully for you. If there's any chance your toddler has a rebellious streak, please take this review as a warning... i.e. read it with the weight I should have given the negative reviews I read. I don't know what to suggest as an alternative... I guess try to find a program that will *ACTUALLY* offer troubleshooting help, in case you end up needing it. I'd incorrectly believed this was that program. Maybe my first clue should have been the fact that the author repeatedly tells readers to contact her immediately for help...but never provides her contact information in the book. (I found her email after a few minutes of internet searching.)
